Boys and girls are breaking down taboos and learning essential Menstrual Hygiene Management training with WaterAid in Tsimahavaobe School, Madagascar. Every day, more than 800 million girls and women around the world between 15 and 49 have their period – yet the subject is still surrounded by stigma and taboo.

The arrival of water in Ambatoantrano village, Madagascar means that these women no longer have to walk a long while to find water and wash their families' clothes.

Trained local masons and toilet slab makers in Ambatoantrano village, Madagascar. Being trained masons means they have a vocation and can help more local communities enjoy the life-changing benefits of the humble loo.

At Mahadev Primary School in Madhya Pradesh, India, the school has a 'Child Cabinet', set up to encourage and monitor hygiene, behaviour and attendance. With better hygiene facilities and education, classmates are at less risk of hygiene-related diseases and can spend more time in school.

WaterAid's history stretches back 35 years – to 1981 – when on 21 July we were officially established as a charitable trust. Since then, incredible progress has been made – 9 in 10 people around the world now have access to clean water. Together, we can look forward to the time when we can say that we helped bring clean water to everyone, everywhere. One family, one village, one country at a time.
