12 days of Christmas cheer!

♫ On the twelfth day of Christmas,

thirty-fiiiiiive years of progress,
four taps for schools,
three full wells,
two brand new loos,
and clean water for a baby!   
Excitement builds as the borehole drills in Kapyanga, Malawi. The water from this borehole will help to to improve sanitation and hygiene facilities in local health centres.

Improved access to clean water, a latrine and bath shelter restores Margaret Among’s dignity. Margaret says, "Now that I have no problem in getting water, I am always clean. I have more time to do other things. I use the time to repair people’s clothes at a fee. I also make pancakes which I sell in our local market and at times I braid ladies’ hair. I am able to buy books for my children as well as meet my household needs."

Debora's cheeky smile shows just how much more she enjoys school now that her primary school has a sanitation block. Fact of the day: clean water and toilets keep children healthy and able to attend school.

Boys and girls are breaking down taboos and learning essential Menstrual Hygiene Management training with WaterAid in Tsimahavaobe School, Madagascar. Every day, more than 800 million girls and women around the world between 15 and 49 have their period – yet the subject is still surrounded by stigma and taboo.

Eight mums a washing

The arrival of water in Ambatoantrano village, Madagascar, means that these women no longer have to walk a long while to find water and wash their families' clothes.

Trained local masons and toilet slab makers in Ambatoantrano village, Madagascar. Being trained masons means they have a vocation and can help more local communities enjoy the life-changing benefits of the humble loo.

At Mahadev Primary School in Madhya Pradesh, India, the school has a 'Child Cabinet', set up to encourage and monitor hygiene, behaviour and attendance. With better hygiene facilities and education, classmates are at less risk of hygiene-related diseases and can spend more time in school.

Thirty-fiiiiiive years of progress,

and clean water for a baby!   

WaterAid's history stretches back 35 years to 1981 when on 21 July we were officially established as a charitable trust. Since then, incredible progress has been made – 9 in 10 people around the world now have access to clean water. Together, we can look forward to the time when we can say that we helped bring clean water to everyone, everywhere. One family, one village, one country at a time.

Pupils enjoying their new hand washing station installed by WaterAid. Since receiving new facilities at their school, children are now more motivated to go to school and have a safe, private place to go to the toilet.

It's a tug-o-well! This community in Udayapur, Nepal pulls together to take out the mud extracted from the well drilling process.

Henitsoa stands proudly inside her toilet block at her school in Ankazobe district, Madagascar. 88% of the population in Madagascar lack access to sanitation and so adults and children alike in this village cherish their toilets.
